06.03.2025 NSUMBU – MODERN FISH MARKET FACING SEVERE FLOODING.

The newly constructed modern fish market in Nsumbu is facing severe flooding as rising water levels from Lake Tanganyika spill into the market and surrounding residential areas. The unexpected increase in water levels has raised concerns among traders and local authorities.
Speaking on the situation, Nsama Town Council’s Director of Planning stated that the council is considering constructing a sea wall to prevent further flooding. “The rise in water levels was unprecedented, and we need to take urgent measures to curb the problem before it worsens,” he said.
Similarly, the Director of Engineering emphasized the need for a retaining wall to control the overflow and protect both the market and nearby homes. “The water capacity in the lake is increasing, and without proper infrastructure, the risk of flooding will continue to grow,” he explained.
Local traders have expressed worry over the situation, fearing damage to their goods and disruption of business. The council has assured residents that efforts will be made to implement long-term solutions to safeguard the market and surrounding areas.
