Nsama District came into existence in February 2012 after being declared by the late President Mr. Michael C. Sata. The District is located on latitude 8.9°S and longitude 29.7°E and covers a land surface of 7,492 Km2. The District shares international borders with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the North and also shares district boundaries with Kaputa to the Northwest, Mpulungu to the North-east and Mporokoso on the South. Nsama District is situated 245Km west of the Provincial capital Kasama and over 1,260km from the national capital of Lusaka. The local municipal services are provided by Nsama Town Council which is located along the Nsama Mporokoso Main Road (D37). The predominant tribes in the area are Tabwa and Bemba people and at the same time the main languages spoken in the district are Tabwa and Bemba although there is a mixture of other spoken languages e.g. English, Swahili etc. The Nsama Chiefdom is the only main Chiefdom in Nsama District with Senior Chief Nsama and Itabwa Na Kando traditional ceremony is usually celebrated by the Tabwa people. The District has a total population of approximately 77,651 people with about 51% female and 49% male with an estimated growth rate of 4.2% and population density of 10:4(CSO, 2022). The District has one constituency – Chimbamilonga Constituency which has 17 wards who have political leadership in the Full Council. The district is rich in natural resource endowments such as; Lake Tanganika, Lake Mweru Wantipa, Nsumbu Naional Parks, Water Falls, Hot Springs etc. While the major economic occupation for local people in the district are fishing, trading and agriculture.
